Quik Is The Name is the debut studio album by American hip hop artist and producer DJ Quik, released by Profile Records on January 15, 1991. Production was mainly handled by DJ Quik along with his executive producers Courtney Branch and Tracy Kendrick. Recording sessions took place throughout 1990 at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles, California, with a production budget of $30,000.
The album debuted and peaked at #29 on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling over 50,000 copies in its first week in America. The album was certified Gold 4 months after its release on May 30, 1991 and Platinum 4 years later on July 26, 1995. As of 2005, the album has sold over 1,070,000 copies in United States.

David Marvin Blake (born January 18, 1970), better known by his stage name DJ Quik, is an American rapper, songwriter, DJ and record producer, known for his production in the G-funk style of West Coast hip-hop. Blake's stage name reflects his ability to produce records in a short period of time. Some of his top songs include "Dollaz + Sense", "Tonite", "Born and Raised in Compton" and "Jus Lyke Compton".

He was inspired by funk and soul artists, such as Roger Troutman (who taught him the use of the talkbox, which became a trademark for Quik's sound throughout his career) and George Clinton.
Blake began selling homemade mixtapes after he received a turntable for his 8th grade promotion. He began doing shows DJing around Southern California, many of which ended in rival gang-related altercations.

DJ Quik was signed by Profile Records in the summer of 1990, after they heard his 1987 mixtape "The Red Tape". He was the most expensive signee that Profile had ever acquired and was also the first artist to have got a six figure deal on the label.

Before Quik Is The Name arrived, DJ Quik was riding around Southern California selling his self-produced, homemade mixtapes with anyone who would give him a ride. “I had 100 tapes for sale and I had a buyer for every one of them muthafuckas all throughout LA,” DJ Quik says. “I used to deliver my mixtapes. Now that you think about it, that was some dangerous shit to do.”

“I just wanted to write these cool stories that kind of mirrored what I had just seen, but take the sting out of it with a cool voice,” DJ Quik says. “It almost read like a newspaper, like a ticker tape back in the day. It’s our neighborhood and what’s going on now, just put to a beat.”

The album's lead single, "Born and Raised in Compton", was released on December 4, 1990. It peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and spent 14 weeks on the chart. The album's second single, "Tonite" was released on June 10, 1991. It peaked at number 49 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 3 on the US Rap Songs chart. The song became his most successful and highest charting single to date. The album's third and final single, "Quik Is The Name", was released on November 11, 1991. The single did not manage to chart.
